The City of Albany has won the 2017 Western Australian Heart Foundation Local Government Award for councils with a population between 10,000 and 50,000.
Heart Foundation WA Chief Executive Maurice Swanson congratulated the city for its work which was also highly commended by Heart Foundation judges in the national awards.
“The awards are important because they recognise the outstanding achievements of local governments in the continuing fight against heart disease,” Mr Swanson said.
“Local governments play a pivotal role in introducing structural change, implementing policies and creating supportive environments which allow people to be physically active, reduce smoking and improve their nutrition.”
City of Albany Acting Executive Manager Community Services Samantha Stevens accepted the award at the Environmental Health Association Conference in Perth on Friday and said she was incredibly proud of the City’s achievements.
“Our submission demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation in promoting the health and wellbeing of the Albany community via two key projects, Healthy Albany and the Cycle City Strategy,” Ms Stevens said.
“We have worked incredibly hard to promote and engage the community to cycle for transport, recreation, tourism and health by providing opportunities and amenities conducive to the enjoyment of cycling.
“The Healthy Albany initiative aims to increase the City’s capacity to provide environments, facilities and events that support a healthy lifestyle and we will continue to work to create a healthy environment for people who live, work or visit Albany.”
