The WA State Government has announced a new Rural Fire Division in its response to the Ferguson Report into the Waroona bushfires that wreaked so much havoc in 2016.

The $80 million division, will be created as part of a restructure of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan said “For the first time ever, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services will have a division dedicated to rural firefighting and bushfire management”.

Included in this announcement is a $18 million Bushfire Centre for Excellence to development fire management practises across the State, $34.6 million for bushfire mitigation, including more burn offs, and $15 million to bushfire risk management.

This is wonderful news as we’ve had many fire dangers within the Central Wheatbelt & Avon Valley over the years, especially around harvest when the heat it is of a real concern out here. To think that some of this funding is going to help management across the state including our region is great! Our rural communities where the shires are involved and locals often need to ban together to contain any outbreaks on remote properties. The WA Farmers Federation welcomes this funding as well into the regions.
