State Government Rejects Council Land Grab

Carter family to retain 311 hectares

State Government Rejects Council Land Grab Bendigo Advertiser

The Carter Family is celebrating this morning after Victorian Minister for Planning Richard Wynne voted against the City of Greater Bendigo’s application to forcedly buy part of their land in Marong.

Council had voted to put a compulsory acquisition overlay on 311 hectares of land near the Calder Highway for the proposed Marong Business Park in April.

However Minister Wynne says the decision - however well intentioned - ignored the strongly held views of the land owners and was not justified in the circumstances.

Mayor Margaret O Rourke has described the decision as extremely disappointing given the lack of suitable industrial land in the shire.

The Victoria Planning Authority will now work with council to find an alternative site for the industrial Business Park.
