The family of a Bray Park teenager who passed away after a weightlifting accident last week, say his legacy will forever live on.

15-year-old Ben Shaw had his life support switched off, five days after a barbell carrying around 100kg, almost double his body weight, fell onto his throat during a bench press.

But in death, Ben will be able to potentially save the lives of ten people, by donating his major organs and tissue.

"Ben was able to leave a legacy and donate his organs and tissue, giving life to others," the family statement read.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has been involved in Ben's care, including all his friends and family."

His local football club, Pine Central Holy Spirit RLFC also released a statement, saying as a club they will be assisting to "see the world through Ben's eyes and ensure his legacy lives on in support of his parents and family".

At any one time, about 1,600 people are on the transplant waiting list, according to government statistics.
