Recommendation for capped tow fees

'Cowboy Towies' Lassoed By New Law

The days of towies being able to charge exorbitant fees for moving cars, and potentially even more for storing them, could soon be over.

The state cabinet will consider today consider a proposal to cap towing fees at $250 after recommendations by a former Judge tasked with finding ways to squash dodgy practices within the industry.

On top of the capping recommendations, former District Court Judge Michael Forde has suggested new licences for drivers and increased penalties for anyone who is caught doing the wrong things.

The investigation was launched earlier in the year after stories came out about operators charging up to $1000 for towing, and supposed 'predatory behaviour' being used to trick people into being towed.
