The Acting Transport Minister says truckies won't be slapped with fines straight away, on day one of the new truck restrictions on the M1 between Springwood and Robina.
The change applies to any vehicle weighing more than 4.5 tonne, meaning they have to stay in the left two lanes at all times unless it's an emergency.
Speaking with Marto, Ed and Robin this morning, Steven Miles says that's not the focus.
"The focus isn't on fining. Our truckies are professional drivers, they're used to complying with road rules and we expect they will do that. But there are fines there, if they don't"
The Minister says the laws are about preparing for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
"We want to trial this ahead of the Games and see if it makes the kind of difference it has overseas. In the US, it's lead to a nearly three quarter reduction in truck related crashes.. that's in South Carolina and Texas"
