Police are urging South East Queenslanders to be extra careful when selling products, especially iPhones, via social media or online sales sites.

The warning comes after detectives noticed a jump in the number of reports to police about a person arranging to meet the seller of an iPhone. When the two people meet up, the so-called 'buyer' asks to see the phone, and then immediately runs off.

Queensland police saying extra caution is needed.

"Asking for identification before handing over any products or meeting in a secure public place can decrease the chances of someone potentially becoming a victim of these crimes."

Anyone who may have any information in relation to these matters can contact Police Link on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
