UPDATE: Police have launched an investigation into the fire, after site owners reportedly caught a group of young kids on CCTV footage entering the site less than a hour
before the blaze started.

Workers who arrived at the scene this morning told Channel 9 reporters they were not surprised about the incident, apparently there's been numerous issues not only on their site but at others across Chermside, including tools being stolen.

EARLIER: Fire has ripped through a high-rise apartment block that is currently under construction in Chermside, north of Brisbane.

Firefighters arrived at the empty site on Hamilton Road just before 7pm on Monday night to find a shade cloth covering the scaffold cladding well alight, separate blazes spreading through the middle and top of the building.

Crews did manage to get the fire under control within a few minutes. At this stage it is unsure how much damage was caused.

Fire investigators are expected to visit the scene on Tuesday morning.
