A New Zealand man who punched a motorist, causing him to fall into the oncoming path of a garbage truck has been sentenced.

A 50-year-old man, Shane Merrigan, was killed in December 2015 when he fell under the wheels of a garbage truck during the road rage incident.

Heke will spend at least five years and two months behind bars after being sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail.
