Does Avoca need more sports grounds?

A long-time Avoca Beach resident is continuing his quest to turn land on Avoca Drive into sporting ovals and a recreational area.

Bob Pickett first met representatives of the former Gosford City Council on site, with the proposal, 12 months ago.

"I would like to donate approximately 4 acres of flat land to the Avoca community for recreational use... (and for council to) release a small portion of the neighboring community land (another 4 acres) which is needed to make the area large enough for two sporting fields, amenities and parkland," Mr Pickett explains on his website.

A Central Coast Council spokesperson confirmed Mr Pickett has been has followed up on his proposal a number of times with staff, but said there is currently no DA lodged with council and the land is not suitable to turn into a sporting oval in any case.

"It is COSS (Coastal Open Space System) land and flood prone and could cost a significant amount of money to remediate to only eventually establish one oval," the spokesperson said.

"Heazlett Park is already a well-used and maintained oval for the benefit for the Avoca community."

Mr Pickett has criticised council's earlier rejection of the proposal, given they also acknowledge a lack of sporting ovals will be a future problem.

"I do not seek any financial remuneration for this land but need huge community support to show Council this is a worthwhile project to serve our growing population now and into the future."

Mr Pickett says he's now considering a public awareness campaign to garner support for his proposal.
