Crops Growing in the Central West

Opiate Poppies in Full Bloom

Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair, has welcomed the progress of the state’s first opiate poppy crop, which is now in bloom in a number of secret locations across the Central West.

Mr. Blair said, the new industry could be worth up to $100 million over the next ten years. Having inspected one paddock, he says the rest of the crop is doing just as well, which spells a strong future for poppy crops in NSW.

More than 400 hectares have been planted, for harvest later this year, which is set to benefit growers and producers, as well as patients who can use the opiate poppy as a medicinal treatment for a number of conditions, since the laws changed last year.
