Westonia

A Hidden Gem

Article heading image for Westonia

The local larrikin that is Spike Jones went with myself and my mum Patty out to Westonia this week for a bit of an expedition. What a beautiful hidden gem in our region! We went straight to the shire office, paid our $3 and headed on in to the Hood- Penn museum. An incredible exhibition of history in there, I can’t even begin to go through all the different things they’ve got on display. The most memorable part being the simulator in the middle of the museum where you get to go in experience what it was like for miners underground, it was hauntingly eye opening and really made an impact.

The town itself is so beautifully presented, there are shire offices/buildings that instead of going to waste with nothing/no one residing in them, have been re-decorated to look like olden day businesses and it makes the place just look so vibrant and great. We went to go and see the Edna May mine but on the day we went unfortunately for us there was a bit of a blast which prevented too much of a look so I plan going back to take it all in again. However, we did get over to the tavern for a cold beverage and were in awe of just the amount of Dockers memorabilia/ decorations were around, even the pool table was purple with the game balls being segregated into Fremantle and Eagles. I was told by the barmaid that if you’re a Dockers fan, that is where you need to be on derby day, there’s no other place like it. If you’ve never been before, I highly recommend it be added to that travel list of yours and if you’ve been before many a time or even live there and have some lovely stories to share about the town please do feel free to share them with me by messaging the Central Wheatbelt Facebook page :)
