An 18 year old man has been charged following an alleged assault at Coffs Harbour last week.

About 12:30am last Thursday morning, it’s alleged a man assaulted another man outside a licenced premises on West High Street in Coffs Harbour, before fleeing the area.

A 27 year old man was allegedly punched in the head and was found unconscious.

He was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital by NSW Ambulance paramedics with serious head injuries.

"He has received a fracture to his skull and at this stage we are aware of bleeding and bruising to the brain", Det Insp Jameson said.

Police say that alcohol is a factor in the incident.

"Once again, with the effects of alcohol, we have somebody that's in hospital".

Police from Coffs Clarence Police District established a crime scene and commenced investigations into the incident.

About 12:45am on Saturday morning, an 18 year old man was arrested by police and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station.

The man was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Sunday, where he was granted bail to reappear on Tuesday 20 February 2018.
