Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has called for a rational debate on the Coffs Harbour bypass after a woman who yesterday said “just build it” received a phone threat to her life.

Mr Hartsuyker said, "while there was a clearly legitimate debate to be had about the bypass, there was an obligation on participants, including the media, to ensure that it was as civil and balanced as possible".

"Some players have been over the top in the language used about the plan as it currently stands, and I believe that the highly emotive nature of the debate has contributed to this nasty incident".

The preferred design has been the centre of much discussion during the consultation period, with the Coffs Harbour City Council fighting against the NSW Government wanting tunnels in the plan rather than cuttings and land bridges, stating that noise will be a major issue without tunnel, even though they have shown no documentation to back the claims.

“We need to ensure that it is an isolated incident”, Mr Hartsuyker said.
