Coffs Harbour farmer Troy Blackman has been named as a finalist for the 2017 NSW Farmer of the Year award.

Last year Mr Blackman was announced as Young Farmer of the Year for his work at Waterfall Produce in Upper Orara.

Speaking to Triple M, Mr Blackman said that the industry has really been given a boost.

"In the last 12 months there has been a huge boost to the industry, in the Coffs Coast and Mid North Coast area, there's been a big push behind councils to connect people with local producers and fresh food from the area", Mr Blackman said.

According to many in the Orara Valley farming community, what Troy Blackman is doing is really putting the Orara on the map.

The Upper Orara farmer will go up against Will Coulton from the Northern Tablelands, and Mike and Velia O’Hare from Cootamundra for the prestigious title.

NSW MP Niall Blair said the awards identify the best producers in the state.

“NSW farmers are the best in the business, and these awards are a deserved acknowledgement of those producers who are at the top of their game,” Mr Blair said.

NSW Farmer of the Year is a joint initiative between NSW Department of Primary Industries and NSW Farmers supported by SafeWorkNSW and The Land newspaper.

The 2017 award winner will receive a $10,000 prize, while the remaining finalists will receive $2,000.

The winner will be announced on December 11.
