A Coffs Harbour man will spend at least 17 months in prison after his sentence was handed down in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday.

Jacob Dolar had given a guilty plea to various charges of stalk and intimidation, choking, and malicious damage last October.

Prior to the incident, Mr Dolar had been arrested in relation to alleged breaches and charged at Coffs Harbour Police Station.

Police then refused bail, but, on the same day he appeared at Coffs Harbour Local Court before Magistrate Thomas, where he was granted conditional bail.

After being released the man allegedly assaulted his 21 year old girlfriend by choking, slapping and kicking the her.

Police from Coffs Clarence Police District conducted extensive inquiries for two days to locate Mr Dolar before he was arrested at a Korora motel on Pacific Highway.

Following this incident Jacob Dolar was granted conditional bail by Magistrate Jeff Linden in Coffs Harbour Local Court.

On Wednesday, Mr Dolar sat in the courtroom with his family by his side while Magistrate Gibson handed down his sentence.

Magistrate Gibson told the court, “matters of domestic violence need to be taken seriously by the court”.

He said that with his history, there was a significant risk he will reoffend.

In handing down the sentence he said that he believed Mr Dolar’s chances for rehabilitation were “guarded, verging on poor”.

Jacob Dolar was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in prison, with a non parole period of 17 months.

He farewelled his family before being taken into custody.
