UPDATE:

Police have confirmed that two people have died in a crash this afternoon at Maclean. The Highway remains closed in both direction.

EARLIER:

The Pacific Highway is closed in both directions, with emergency services at the scene of a serious crash at Maclean.

Crews were called to the area near Ferry Park before 4:30pm following reports of a crash between multiple vehicles.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has landed at the nearby showgrounds, where they say that one patient is being stabilized and prepared to be flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

According to reports there are occupants trapped, with traffic queues more than 2km each way.

Diversions are in place with motorists advised to use to Summerland Way and Bruxner Highway as an alternative route.  This route is suitable for all vehicles.

It is unknown how long the highway will be closed for, however motorists are advised to expect massive delays into the evening.
