It may seem heartless but it’s a simple idea to think about that could become a reality. “Take Responsibility and survive; or be a number in a Road Toll”.

It took less than 10 hours for the 2018 NSW Road Toll to register statistics after what has been a horror period on the roads in NSW these holidays.

In what is a tragic start to the new year to multiple families throughout the state, three people were killed in the first 10 hours of the year on NSW roads in separate crashes.

A woman was killed in Yagoona just after midnight, while a man died near Newcastle.

Just after 9am on Monday, a man also died near Grafton, bringing the number of lives lost during Operation Safe Arrival to 28.

Operation Safe Arrival, the State’s Christmas and New Year road safety campaign, started at 12.01am on Friday 15 December, and ended at 11:59pm on Monday 1 January 2018.

Police from the Coffs Clarence LAC were called to Clarence Way at Copmanhust, near Grafton, about 9:15am on Monday, after a vehicle left the roadway and rolled onto its roof. The driver, a 75 year old man died at the scene.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, Commander of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said people need to take responsibility every time they get into a car this year.

“The year has started badly on NSW roads, after three people died in separate crashes in the early hours of the morning.

“We have now lost 28 lives during Operation Safe Arrival and the holiday period has been nothing short of a tragedy for everyone involved.

“We will continue to target those drivers who are putting everyone at risk; but in order to save lives, the entire community needs to think differently when it comes to road safety.

During the operation this year, just over 19,000 speeding infringements were issued, with 1100 people charged with drink driving offences.
