A family of seven had a lucky escape after their houseboat sunk on the Clarence River in Iluka on Monday afternoon.

According to Marine Rescue NSW, the Iluka/Yamba crew were called to the site of the houseboat after a distress flare was sent following a storm about 5pm.

It’s understood that the father of the family is believed to have smashed a window of the boat after it capsized on the river.

John Murray from Marine Rescue NSW said, “Other people were able to come to their aid before we arrived at the scene”.

All seven people got out safely, with one campers said that there were also three dogs onboard that were rescued as well.

A salvage crew is due to assess the situation today.
