A father has been sentenced to prison following the death of his son in a crash near Nana Glen last year.

Darren James Wilson, 47, was driving the vehicle that was involved in the fatal collision that killed his 23 year old son Bradley on 3 June 2017.

It is understood that both men had attended a local soccer game, where both had been drinking beer, before attending a hotel in Coramba that evening, where they continued to drink alcohol.

About 8:30pm that night, they left the hotel and drove away in a Holden Commodore station wagon. A short time later, Darren Wilson was driving west on Orara Way at Nana Glen, in a 100km/h zone, his son was in the front seat, both not wearing seat belts.

On a curve in the road, the father lost control of the car and crashed, causing his son, Bradley, to die instantly at the scene from his injured.

A blood test returned a high level of alcohol. He was later charged with Aggravated Dangerous Driving (High Range PCA) Causing Death.

Mr Wilson plead guilty to the charge.

On Friday, in Coffs Harbour District Court, Mr Wilson was sentenced by Acting Judge Charteris.

He was given a prison term of 3 years 9 months, with a non parole period of 18 months. His licence has been disqualified for 3 years.

The Judge recommended that Mr Wilson have access to psychological treatment addressing considerable grief, regret and remorse.

He also recommended that he be considered to serve his sentence in a minimum security facility.

The tragic events that have affected a family and community serve as a reminder to anyone not to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after drinking.
