UPDATE:

Police are investigating a suspicious church fire at Glenreagh on Sunday morning.

About 4:50am, emergency services responded to reports of a church on fire on Boundary Street.

A crime scene was established, which is being examined by forensic specialists.

Detectives continue with inquiries into the incident, however at this stage the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

EARLIER:

An early morning fire has destroyed a church in Glenreagh.

Fire fighters arrived just after 5am to find the St Paul’s Catholic Church in Boundary Street fully engulfed in flames.

Glenreagh Rural Fire Service we’re assisted by Hazmat and Fire And Rescue NSW crews from Coffs Harbour.

Local Jennie Joans took this photo from the blaze saying, the “photos I never thought I would take. Very sad morning”.

Irving and Shepherd of Nana Glen originally built the church which was opened in May 1931.

However, local residents are this morning waking up to a smouldering shell that once was their local church.

This is the second fire in Glenreagh this weekend after crews were called to a property in Timber Top Road yesterday.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are continuing.
