A Coffs Harbour unit has been destroyed by fire late this afternoon.

Fire crews were called to West High Street as smoke haze blanketed the CBD just after 5pm.

Police closed West High Street between Azalea Ave and Murdoch Street while fire fighters extinguished the blaze.

Fire crews on the scene had to break into other units to get to the fire.

Fire Rescue NSW Station Commander for Coffs Harbour, Steve Ellis, told Triple M that no one was inside the unit at the time.

"Fire Fighters conducted a search and found that nobody was inside the fire affected unit", he said.

According to FRNSW, the middle unit is completely damaged, with minimal damage to the adjoining units, however further investigations will uncover any other damage.

Forensic Investigators arrived this evening and will continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

The road was reopened to traffic just before 8pm.
