Upgrades to the Coffs International Stadium are set to get underway with the first sod turned on Thursday outside the stadium.

Coffs Harbour Mayor, Cr Denise Knight joined Cowper Federal Member, Luke Hartsuyker to signal the start of the project which will see the delivery of two new grandstands, refurbishment to the existing grandstand, a new digital signage screen, and an additional 150 car parking spaces.

The $13.44 million project will not only revitalise the 20 year old facility, but also create jobs for the region.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester said, "The project will create 62 jobs during construction, and another 41 permanent jobs when the stadium reopens".

The first phase of the project includes the construction of a new carpark in the northern precinct of the site.

Local firm AJ Pipelines and Construction Pty Ltd will undertake the work after being awarded the contract.  The company have just completed work on the Jetty4Shores project.

Various events run at the stadium constantly bring an influx of visitors to our region, boosting the local economy.

Cr Knight told Triple M, "it brings in a huge amount of money, a huge amount of publicity, and people get to experience what we get to experience everyday of our live".

The Federal Government have invested $6.5 millions into the upgrade from the Building Better Regions Fund.
