Almost 43,000 Ford Focus owners should expect a letter from Ford Australia, warning them that a fault with their car could lead to a fire.

On Thursday, a safety recall was released saying that “Certain Focus vehicles built from April 12, 2011 through September 29, 2015, under particular environmental conditions may ingest excessive levels of dust, which may block the carbon canister during a purge cycle”.

The recall notice went on to say that if this condition is not corrected, the fuel tank may crack, resulting in a fuel leak.

"A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire".

Ford is now writing to owners of affected vehicles, with owners advised to contact their local Ford dealership for an inspection and rectification.

For further information contact any authorised Ford dealer or the Ford Customer Relationship Centre on 1800 503 672.
