Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser, has encouraged the Coffs Harbour City Council to apply for grants to assist with funding to dredge sand at the Coffs Harbour Boat Ramp.

It follows an announcement from the NSW Government for coastal councils to apply for a share of $1.5 million in government funding for essential dredging projects.

On Triple M on Wednesday morning, the local MP told Moffee that his suggestion to council is to get an application in.

"Let's get an application in for dredging in the short term, and let's look at getting a long term solution, which I believe was proposed", Mr Fraser said.

Mr Fraser said the funding allows coastal councils to apply for up to 50 per cent of the cost of dredging operations and pre-dredging studies for their local waterways.

"At the end of the day, if we are going to look at it again, let's do what the engineers advise",

"Do what was proposed, get that sand out of the boat ramp area", Mr Fraser told Triple M.

The latest program is an opportunity for councils to partner with the State Government to deliver better access to waterways for recreational and commercial users and safer boating.

At this week's Coffs Harbour City Council Meeting, councillors will vote as to whether they support the vision of the 'Coffs Harbour Regional Boat Ramp Precinct Enhancement Committee'.

Their vision centres around 3 focuses. Safety, Economic Benefit and Recreational amenity.

The matter will be addressed at the Coffs Harbour Council Meeting at the Council Chambers on Thursday afternoon.

Applications for the Rescuing Our Waterways program are now open and close on Friday 8 June.
