Questions are being raised about the new proposed civic space in the Coffs Harbour CBD.

Council released concept plans of three designs this week for the public to view and have their say on.

The new space will include a library, art gallery and cafes, as well as a civic space for workshops.

While council have made it clear that the design will not include a performing arts centre or entertainment centre, it will include new Council Chambers.

Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser, has questioned the project saying that there have been no costings or outline of

"What amazes me with this whole concept, is that there is no costings on it," he said on Triple M.

"In the document put out on their website, it says it would be jointly funded by state and federal government, well, you've got to cut your cloth to fit the suit".

Dubbing the project as 'bizarre', Mr Fraser said they wanting to spend all this money on a new Council Chambers "thinly disguised as a civic space".

Videos, images and other information concerning the design process are available on the Council's website (link below). The community have until Sunday, March 25, to provide feedback on the concepts.

The new building, which is to be built on the site of 23-31 Gordon Street, is proposed to incorporate:

  • A new state-of-the-art central library and regional gallery.
  • A multi-purpose civic and meeting space.
  • A café and co-working space.
  • Council customer service area and office space, including new Council Chambers.

While speaking with Moffee on Triple M, Mr Fraser said one Councillor told him that "they need all the council staff in one building".

Mr Fraser is calling on Councillors to start asking questions as to why Coffs Harbour needs this.
