Police are appealing for public assistance after a girl was approached by a man in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday.

About 7:45pm, police have been told a 12 year old girl was walking her dog on Polwarth Drive when a man approached her.

The man started to follow her down the street and repeatedly tried to initiate contact with the girl.

The girl managed to get away near the intersection of Hampshire Close and Pearce Drive and reported the incident to her parents when she returned home.

Police from Coffs Clarence Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

Investigators wish to speak with a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He has been described as being of Caucasian appearance with a tanned complexion, aged between 20 and 30, fit build, short brown hair with a beard and had a high-pitched and scratchy voice. The man was wearing a black cap, sunglasses with yellow/orange reflective lenses, red singlet shirt, black shorts and black shoes with an orange sole.
