The dry spell appears over for now with heavy rain falling on the Coffs Coast.

Locals are waking up to a wet weekend after heavy falls overnight saw the Bureau of Meteorology issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

According to BOM, areas from Woolgoolga and Glenreagh to Macksville and South West Rock can expect heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

More than 63mm of rain is reported to have fallen in Loaders Lane in Coffs Harbour in the space of an hour, with 77mm falling in bray Street in 60 minutes.

Motorists are also reminded to take extra care on our roads with the conditions hampering visibility with some road closures in areas due to flooding.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL

For people in parts of Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 12:35 pm Saturday, 14 October 2017.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Inverell, Maclean, Woolgoolga, Sawtell, Dorrigo and Bingara.

25mm was recorded in 10min at Kempsey Aiport at 8:20am.

65mm was recorded at Loaders Lane (Coffs Harbour) in 60 minutes from 4:20am to 5:20am.

77mm was recorded at Bray St (Coffs Harbour) in 60 minutes 8:15 to 9:15am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
   * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
   * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
   * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
   * Unplug computers and appliances.
   * Avoid using the phone during the storm.
   * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
   * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
