Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser has defended his efforts to prevent around 50 public service jobs being lost in the Coffs and Mid North Coasts, after facing criticism from the Public Service Association.

The criticism relates to state government plans made public in October last year, to put 18,000 public housing properties, including those between Port Macquarie and Woolgoolga, up for tender.

“The Nationals' Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser has been very vocal about the importance of jobs and services in the region,” PSA Assistant General Secretary, Troy Wright said in a statement.

“Now with Public Housing about to be literally wiped off the map in the area he has not said a word.

“The question is why is the mid North Coast being singled out and hit with a quarter of the job cuts in Housing across the state?”

The local member insists he is standing up for the workers set to be affected.

"I have me with the staff of the Department of Housing, I have made representations to the Minister, I've taken the staff's concerns to the immediate past minister (Brad Hazzard) and requested a meeting with the new minister (Antony Roberts) post haste when parliament resumes next week," Mr Fraser said.

"If this action is to take place, I'll be seeking redundancy for staff, and to ensure the private sector picks up the staff that are already trained and looking for jobs."
