After becoming the Federal Member for Cowper in November 2001, Luke Hartsuyker has announced he is retiring from politics.

During his tenure, Mr Hartsuyker served in various ministerial roles including, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment; Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister; Minister for Vocational Education and Skills; Assistant Minister for Employment and Deputy Leader of the House.

Mr Hartsuyker was elected as the local member after the retirement of long standing Nationals member Garry Nehl almost 17 years ago.

He said that he's overseen a number of achievements in the region, including the duplication of the Pacific Highway, and substantial economic growth.

Looking ahead to retirement, the father of two plans to spend more time at home with his wife and family after his term in politics ends.

“Irene and myself will look forward to having a bit more time and doing some travelling," he said.

The attention now turns to the future, with no obvious replacement Nationals candidate yet emerging.

Whoever it is will be taking on Labor's candidate Andrew Woodward, and the Greens Sally Townley.

There are also suggestions popular independent Rob Oakeshott, who's previously held the seat of Lyne, could also throw his hat in the ring.
