An appeal has been put out to the Coffs Harbour community for information after a teenager was allegedly approached on her way to school in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday.

Police have been told that at about 8:45am, a man approached a 16 year old girl at a reserve between MacKays Road and Joyce Street.

The man allegedly grabbed hold of her wrist before she punched him in the face and ran away.

The incident was reported to school staff before officers from Coffs Clarence Police District were notified.

Investigators would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is described as being aged in his 20's, about 170cm-175cm tall, of a slim build, and with brown hair.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a dark coloured top.

Investigators have urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000.
