A man has died while surfing at a beach in Yamba on the New South Wales north coast.

About 9:20am on Wednesday morning, the 57 year old man was surfing at Main Beach when he disappeared under waist deep water.

The man was assisted out of the surf by life guards, who commenced CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Maclean District Hospital where he later died.

It is believed the man may have suffered a medical episode.

A brief will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Locals along the New South Wales coastline have been warned of large and powerful surf condition throughout the day.
