A man has died after being pulled from the ocean south of Coffs Harbour.

Just before 5pm on Wednesday, a 54 year old man was swimming with two young boys aged 11 and 14 at Tuckers Rock Beach at Repton.

According to NSW Police, the boys were seen to struggle in the water.

A short time later, the boys returned to shore safely, however it is understood that the man was pulled from the water unresponsive.

Despite the efforts of bystanders who performed CPR, and two North Coast Duty Officers, he couldn't be revived, and died at the scene.

According to Surf Life Saving Media, the man had been in the water for at least 25 minutes, but the circumstances of how he got into difficulty were not immediately clear.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command will prepare a report for the Coroner.
