A close call for a mother and child in Coffs Harbour this afternoon.

Nearby swimmers came to their aid with fears of a near drowning at the mouth of the Coffs Creek.

Although it was low tide at the time, it was still out of the depths for the young child who entered the water before running into trouble around 3pm.

The toddler’s mother then also entered the water to help the child, however then needed assistance as well.

Bystanders rescued the pair to a nearby sandbar, while emergency services and local surf lifesavers were alerted.

The female was assisted back to a nearby ambulance while the child was carried across the water by surf lifesavers around 3:30pm.

Both were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital in a stable condition for further observations.

The latest incident is a strong reminder about the dangers of the water and not allowing small children into the water along.
