A man will face court next month after an alleged road rage incident in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday.

Two off-duty officers were travelling along the Pacific Highway between Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour about 7:30pm, when they allegedly observed a motorist driving erratically and threatening other motorists with a knife.

When stationary at traffic lights it is alleged the male driver got out of his car and threatened the occupants of another car with a knife.

The two off-duty officers approached the armed man and identified themselves, attempting to speak to him.

It is alleged that the armed man assaulted one of the officers.

The 40 year old man was arrested after a brief struggle.

He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with menacing driving, wielding a knife and affray.

The man was granted conditional bail and will appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court on 22 January 2018.
