Police Implement New Strategy For Bike Thefts

Increasing thefts of bikes in recent weeks in Coffs Harbour will see Coffs Clarence Police implement strategy to tackle the crimes.
Over the past few months, approximately 50 bicycles have been stolen, mainly in and around the Coffs Harbour, West Coffs and Park Beach areas. All but 20 have been recovered.
Police have made multiple arrests, mainly juveniles, but the stealing of bikes has continued despite these arrests and bail conditions.
In a concerted effort to reign in these stealing offences, police will proactively speak with anyone on a bicycle (push bike) to confirm the validity of the ownership of the bike. A particular focus will be on persons riding around at night.
Police are calling on the community to help.
Coffs Clarence crime manager, Detective Inspector Darren Jameson said, "Whilst we continue to focus on driving down crime, there is a role for the community to play in helping us. This is our community, and we want to make it as safe as possible.
"If you see someone on a bike in your area, and their behaviour is suspicious to you, call Coffs Harbour Police Station on 02 6691 0799 and let us know, particularly if this is at night or in the early hours of the morning" Det Insp Jameson said.
A recent run of thefts and break ins, has seen Police renew calls for the community to ensure our homes and belongings are secured.
"It is important for us to be security aware, and this means ensuring that our bikes are secured when not in use. This helps prevent them from being stolen".
Det Insp. Jameson said, "Whilst we actively speak to people riding a bike, it’s important to know that some riders may be able to assist us in catching these crooks who are stealing the bikes. That's why we'll be taking all efforts to speak to as many bike riders as possible so we can stop these crimes from continuing.
