The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are getting closer, and those given the honour of carrying the Queen’s Baton around the country have been announced.

Victoria Cross recipient Mark Donaldson will be one of the fifteen Baton Bearers for Coffs Harbour when the relay heads through the city on the 1st of February.

Mr Donaldson will be joined by local sporting identity Mick Maley who is known for many years of service in fundraising with various events in the city.

Sawtell Surf Lifesaving stalwart Michael McGavigan has also been chosen. As an outstanding athlete, Mick inspired many when he was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and continued to train during chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Aside from his 30 years of service to the Sawtell Surf Lifesavers, Mr McGavigan was instrumental in establishing the Coffs Harbour Triathlon.

Another great community member picked to take the baton in Coffs Harbour is Tom Strickland, a recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, OAM for his services to the community, and Citizen of the Year for Coffs Harbour.
Tom helped the local aboriginal people start a housing co-operative in the 1960's, he was the instigator of starting Camp Quality in Northern NSW and ran the program for 23 years.

The relay will pass through Coffs Harbour on Thursday 1 February 2018.
