Emergency Crews are at the scene of a serious crash north of Grafton on the Pacific Highway.

According to one witness, crews worked to free the driver, and sole occupant of a Holden Commodore after it ran into the back of a semi trailer just after 12:30pm at Clarenza, near the Centenary Drive intersection.

The man, described to be middle aged, was assessed by medical specialists, before being airlifted to hospital in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Early indications suggest the car has impacted heavily with the stationary semi trailer in a rest area on the side of the highway.

There is no access to Centenary Drive onto the Pacific Highway.

Traffic is primarily affected travelling northbound, however is starting to build on the highway in both directions, with motorists advised to take an alternative route.

Investigations are continuing.
