The Mid North Coast is warned to brace for heavy rainfalls today and tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a strong high pressure system over the southwestern Tasman Sea is directing southeasterly winds into a trough along the northern half of the New South Wales coast.

Areas including Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, along with Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Dorrigo can expect heavy falls that may lead to flash flooding.

According to the BoM, the pattern is generating heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Mid North Coast and parts of the Northern Tablelands districts.

Rainfall rates exceeding 70mm in one hour, is also possible with thunderstorms in these areas.

In the warning, they say, “100mm to 200mm is expected in the warning area, with the heaviest falls about the higher ground.  Some locations are likely to receive more than 200mm”.

Over the last 24 hours the Hunter region recorded high rainfalls with flooding, including Dungog, which received a further 68mm of rain in one hour this morning, on top of yesterday’s downpour.

The State Emergency Service received more than 700 calls overnight from the Mid North Coast.

They are reminding people not to enter flooded waters.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Hunter district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

Lighter shower activity will continue in this area.
