A beach at Ballina remains closed after a shark attack on Wednesday morning.

Just after 7am, Emergency services were called to Shelly Beach following reports of a shark attack.

According to NSW Police, the person has been taken to Lismore Base Hospital, the extent of injuries are unclear at this stage.

Police continue to liaise with Surf Life Savers and the Department of Primary Industries at Shelly Beach.

It is unknown when the beach will be reopened.
