A TigerAir flight headed for the Gold Coast was forced to divert to Coffs Harbour on Friday.

The Airbus A320-200 had left Sydney, bound for Coolangatta, when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and cabin.

At the time, the plane was travelling south of Coffs Harbour, with the pilot deciding to divert and land at the Coffs Harbour Airport.

After landing safely, passengers disembarked the plane while emergency crews investigated the aircraft.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, as was the return flight due to leave the Gold Coast later in the afternoon.

The aircraft is understood to have remained at Coffs Harbour for 8 hours before returning to Sydney.

According to one witness who contacted Triple M Coffs Coast, the 170 passengers on the flight were then put on buses for the remainder of the journey to the Gold Coast.

The Coffs Coast Advocate is reporting that the airline is understood to have given passengers discount vouchers to use on a future service.

However, one passenger on the flight has told Triple M that the only thing given by the airline was "$5 for food".

"They made us wait two hours in Coffs before they contacted buses" she said.
