A Toormina manufacturer has been handed a massive fine, after a work experience student's fingers were crushed on the job.

Thermal Electric Elements Pty Ltd has been ordered to cough up $250,000 after the 17-year-old had to have the tips of his digits amputated, following the brake press machine accident in 2014.

A Safe Work investigation finding a safety guard had been switched off prior to the incident and that the teen hadn't been provided with adequate training.
