Two Dead in Pacific Highway Crash

Two people have died and three other left injured following a crash on the Pacific Highway on Monday afternoon.

Just after 4:15pm, emergency services were called to the area just south of Maclean after reports of a head-on collision between two cars.

A 78 year old man and his 72 year old female passenger in a northbound hatchback died at the scene.

The occupants of a southbound station wagon suffered serious injuries, including a 40 year old woman in the rear seat who was airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to a Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and two men in the front seats who were taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Lismore Base Hospital.

The highway was closed for some hours while officers from Coffs Clarence Local Area Command examined the scene.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

The crash comes on the same day that Senior NSW Police called for road users to take more care on the roads. The NSW Road Toll is now up to 365, an average of more than one death on NSW roads each day.
