A woman has died following a single vehicle crash near Grafton this afternoon.

About 1pm, a Daihatsu wagon was being driven in a southerly direction along Summerland Way about 25km north of Grafton.

According to NSW Police, it appears the car has left the roadway and struck a tree before crashing down an embankment.

The female passenger was trapped and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

The male driver was taken to Lismore Base Hospital suffering chest injuries and is in a stable condition. He will undergo mandatory drug and urine testing.

Crash Investigation Unit are at the scene.

A brief will be prepared for the information of the Coroner and investigations are continuing.

It continues a bad run on the regions roads after the Pacific Highway re-opened just after 4pm following a multi vehicle crash at Nambucca Heads.

Just after 2pm, emergency services were called to the crash scene near Rutland Street.

Traffic is slowly returning to normal with delays expected throughout the afternoon.
