The Garden City has confirmed its involvement in next years’ Commonwealth Games.

In a huge sporting coup for Toowoomba, Smithy’s Gym has been given the nod from the 2018 Commonwealth Games Canadian boxing team to use the gyms facilities as their training base ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year.

Mayor Antonio said he was delighted the Canadian officials’ recent tour of the city and various facilities had resulted in a firm commitment to return to the Garden City next year.

“The Canadians were effusive in their praise for the general city facilities and particularly the world-class set-up at Smithy’s Gym, where they will train ahead of their Commonwealth Games bouts,” Mayor Antonio said.

“This is a fine endorsement of the city and region and I’m sure other nations will see the benefits of using our region as they make final plans for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism and Events portfolio leader Cr Geoff McDonald said while the Canadians would be fully committed to their final preparations they were keen to enjoy their time in the region.

Cr McDonald said the Darling Downs & South West Embracing 2018 Regional Working Group was pleased to see the arrangement would give residents a chance to be part of the pre-Games excitement.

“We’d love to welcome more countries and teams to experience our hospitality before they compete at the Gold Coast.”

Canadian head boxing coach Mr Daniel Trepanier said, "I was impressed by the town. Everything we need we were able to find in Toowoomba,”

“I was also amazed by the facility. It’s top-notch – you don’t see much better in the world.”

The Glennie School will also play host to the Canadians who will have use of the school's refurbished tartan running track and indoor pool.
