Darling Downs’ community groups and charities can apply for cash grants of up to $20,000 through the latest round of Aurizon’s Community Giving Fund, now open.

Andrew Harding, Managing Director & CEO of Australia’s largest rail freight operator encouraged eligible community groups and charities to apply for the funding, which aims to support community projects.

“The Darling Downs is our community too, so if you belong to a charity or community group that needs support in the areas of Community Safety, Health and Wellbeing, Education or the environment, I encourage you to take the time to look at our website and apply.

“Since 2011, through our Community Giving Fund, we have proudly supported more than 280 charities and not-for-profits in the communities where we operate. This funding all goes towards local community projects, and we look forward to continuing that support in this new round,” said Mr Harding.

Toowoomba’s Base Services was one of the successful ‘Community Safety’ grant recipients in the previous Aurizon Community Giving Fund round.

Base Services Coordinator Nat Spary said the not-for-profit organisation provides homeless or at risk individuals and families in the Toowoomba community with access to a soup kitchen, as well as legal, health, drug and alcohol and financial support services.

“We provide a safe place for men and women of all ages and from diverse cultural backgrounds who are homeless or at high risk of homelessness. This can include ex-service people, people with health issues, addictions, behavioural issues or trauma as a result of abuse, family violence, separation, grief or loss.

“We recently installed security cameras thanks to the Aurizon Community Giving Fund. This installation has discouraged anti-social behaviour such as violence and vandalism, and has also allowed us to identify and defuse potential hazardous behaviour, making the Base a safer and nicer place for all our staff, volunteers and visitors,” said Nat

Mr Harding said Aurizon was pleased to support Base Services through its Community Giving Fund.

“At Aurizon, safety is our highest priority so we are very pleased to support Base Services to provide a safer place for their volunteers, staff and the people and families who are accessing their support,” he said.
