Large hailstones and strong winds are likely to hit south-east Queensland and the Darling Downs within the hour, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned.

A line of severe thunderstorms is moving east from Chinchilla and are forecast to hit the Dalby and Toowoomba council areas by 4:00pm.

Those storms are going to move very, very rapidly eastwards so that might seem like a fair way to the west, but they are moving at about 70 or even 80 kilometres per hour eastwards towards to coast.

BOM Update 4:15PM

Weather Situation:

A strong upper trough and associated surface trough will move eastwards across southern Queensland today, increasing the likelihood of storms over the interior and southeast of the state with some severe storms expected in the southeast quarter of the state. This upper trough should then weaken whilst shifting north on Friday with conditions stabilising again in the south. The next upper trough will move across southern Queensland over the weekend, with thunderstorm chances increasing across the inland Saturday and spreading to the coast Sunday and early next week. Warm to hot conditions will spread to much of the state from Thursday.
