Nexus Infrastructure have advised Highfields locals that their commute between Highfields and Toowoomba could soon take a little longer.

The company constructing the Second Range Crossing will start the final construction stage for the New England Highway realignment in May.

In a letter sent to Highfields residents, the company said the works in the Mount Kynoch area would start on May 4.

"Please allow an additional 10-15 minutes for your travel time while we carry out these works.

At the end of these works, traffic will be permanently switched on to the new section of the New England Highway that includes travelling over the dual arch bridges above the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

Traffic changes will involve lane closures during peak-traffic periods, reduced speed limits and traffic switches."

The work is expected to take up four weeks depending on weather and construction conditions.  The works will not affect traffic on the Goombungee Road.
