Construction Works to Revive Railway Goods Shed

The first stage of works to revive Toowoomba’s historic Railway Goods Shed is under way.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio said the contract for the rectification, construction and fitout works had been awarded to Toowoomba-based Newlands Group.

“The State Heritage-listed Railway Goods Shed is an iconic building which played an important role in the development of the city and the region,” Mayor Antonio said.

“The rectification works will help to revitalise the historic link to the city’s railway heritage.

“The first stage of works will start in April and are expected to be completed in November, weather and building conditions permitting.

“Initial work, including temporary propping and asbestos removal to make the Railway Goods Shed structure safe was completed late last year, paving the way for these rectification works.”

Mayor Antonio said works would cover repairs to the shed structure including the heritage fabric, installation of services to the site, provision of car parking and minimal fitout work.

“More extensive internal fitout will be carried out in the future as demand for the restored facility increases.

“Stage one will deliver an open and flexible space that is intended to be a  mixed use facility that could host commercial and community activities as well as events.  Future stages of the Railway Goods Shed Master Plan will be delivered as funding becomes available.”

The $10 million Railway Goods Shed project is 50% funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program, through the Department of State Development, and 50% funded by Council, with $3.175 million allocated in 2017/18 for the project.
