Toowoomba Regional Council will implement an inspection program to check on dog registration and dog and cat microchipping requirements for all residents throughout the region.

The decision was made at the Ordinary Meeting of Council held yesterday where Environment and Community portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia labelled the program as a positive step for Council as it encouraged responsible pet ownership.

“Dog owners have a legal responsibility to register their pet,” he said.

“In addition to this it is also compulsory to microchip all cats and dogs yet a number of residents throughout the region have failed to do this.

“This is a concern because it doesn’t just present a safety issue but microchipping ensures that we are able to return pets to their owners if they are ever impounded.”

Council will begin this new program on 15 October 2018, undertaking an inspection of all residential and rural residential areas.
